HELSINKI TRAVEL TIPS

1. Best time to visit Helsinki

* Best time to visit Helsinki - July and August.
Summer season is definitely the best time to explore and enjoy Helsinki. Warm and mild weather, long days and even 'white nights'. There are many sand beaches in Helsinki and sea water is comfortable to swim. In addition to standard city tours and bus excursions there are sightseeing cruises available along the coast.

June is a time for Helsinki Carnaval with a samba parade, dancers and music. 12 of June is Helsinki Day with many celebration activities, concerts and performances.
July is more for relaxing, sea and sun, and nature activities like sailing, paddling along the coast and islands, hiking and cycling.

 Helsinki summer view

August is a time of major culture and art events in Helsinki.

Autumn in Helsinki is a colourful time when nature turns from green to yellow-red-orange colours. It is a time for nature lovers. Markets in Helsinki offer seasonal berries and mushrooms and other nature delicates at this time of the year.

Winter is the coldest time in Helsinki, especially between December and February. Daytime is only for 6 hours along. It is the time for indoor activities like visiting museums and art galleries, tasting local food and experience the sauna in all of its forms (smoke sauna, sea side sauna with ice hole or sea pool, traditional Finnish sauna or even Culture sauna).

2. The Northern Lights in Helsinki

The Northern Lights in Helsinki can be seen from September to March, between 21.00 and 02.00, on the average 1 night out of 20.

To be honest, Helsinki is not the right place to see the Northern Lights. It is located far south from the Aurora zone. City strong light pollution makes it difficult to find a completely dark place. If you came to Helsinki just to see the Northern lights, take a trip from Helsinki to Finnish Lapland to get better chances and conditions to see the Aurora. There are night trains from Helsinki to Lapland (to Rovaniemi, Kemijarvi or Kolari) as well as local flights to one of the Lapland airports (Rovaniemi, Ivalo or Kittila). More information about the Northern Lights in Finland here.

To see the northern lights in Helsinki the conditions have to be just right. There must be: 1) clear sky; 2) strong solar storm; 3) preferably no moon.

Best place in Helsinki to see the Northern lights - Tähtitorninvuori Observatory Hill Park (Kopernikuksentie 1) and Kaivopuisto observatory / Kaivopuisto star tower (Ehrenströmintie 1). Those places are located quite near the city center and can be reached by foot. The farther from the Helsinki center the better places to find in city parks or seaside with open panorama sky view towards the North.

3. Main free attractions in Helsinki

Always free museums in Helsinki: The Helsinki City Museum, Tram Museum, Bank of Finland Museum, Päivälehti Museum, Burghers House Museum.

 Helsinki City Museum

Suomenlinna island - UNESCO World Heritage site - one of the biggest sea fortresses in the world, is free to visit. You should pay only ferry return ticket for 5€. There are nice natural paths with sea and city views, swimming beach and picnic places.

Churches are free in Helsinki: Kamppi Chapel of Silence, Helsinki Cathedral, Uspenski Cathedral, Temppeliaukio Church.

Helsinki National Library of Finland

National Library of Finland is located next to Senate Square and free to enter. There are over 100 km of book shelves, and over 3 million books. Library interiors are picturesque and worth making a picture.
